Posted: 9 February I bought Alpha Protocol after extensive reading of reviews on Steam. I was therefore not suprised and I agree with most of those.
Alpha Protocol is an enjoyable game that have remarkable (best-in-class) ideas on plot, story telling and impact on the story, yet it fails to deliver a consistent experience due to its disappointing gameplay. At its core, it's a 3rd person RPG game, mostly oriented to stealth.
Bored games. You can play it. This is definitely the ultimate mind fuck.
The RPG mechanism makes customisation of characters interesting, although as soon as you understand the game mechanics, you will rapidly converge on the same skills (some help for hacking / lockpicking, stealth and pistols). You will rapidly converge on stealth and pistols because SMGs and Shotguns are just bad, Assault Rifles are fine if you have the patience to wait too many seconds to aim, and Pistols are just overkill (to the point that late Bosses are easier than early Bosses if you maximise your Pistol skills).
I greatly enjoyed the impact that player decisions have on the story unfolding. There are really radically different ramifications because of your actions and dialogue choices. I liked a lot the fact that you can influence NPCs with different dialogue options. You do not know before hand what you will say, you can only choose the 'tone' of your answer (e.g., 'sarcastic', 'professional', etc.). I also liked a lot the gathering of intelligence dossiers on NPCs, and how this enables new dialogue options or influence on them. The plot is fascinating, non-linear and immersive, with the real feeling of being at the rudder of the story rather than passively suffering it.
This core mechanics made me enjoy a lot the plot and gives to the game an intrinsic replayability. If these elements were coupled with a gameplay such as the original Deus Ex (or a modernised System Shock 2), I think Alpha Protocol would have been a true masterpiece. Unfortunately, it resembles more to a 3rd person 'Deus Ex: Invisible War'.
Too simplified and dull due to its console-friendly mechanics. Enemy body disappearing, convenient icons highlighting data drives / items to be fetched or the only ladders that can be used, random ammo catridges here and there, weird Stealth mechanics, annoying camera positioning and a sub-par combat mechanics (which you will try to avoid at all cost by stealth killing). Despite this bittersweet review, I can say I enjoyed the experience and I warmly recommend this title. The plot, dialogue mechanics and impact you can have on the story are definitely worth your time.
And few games can rival with Alpha Protocol on those.

A modern day spy RPG. In the near future, worldwide political tensions are at a breaking point when a commercial airliner is shot down by a U.S. Missile over Eastern Europe, killing all aboard. Government claims no involvement, and dispatches Agent Michael Thorton to investigate and bring those responsible to justice. As the first modern day spy role-playing game, Alpha Protocol offers unprecedented control over the development of Thorton's abilities and his interactions with other characters.
Upgrade skills such as physical combat, weapons mastery, cutting-edge technology and even seduction as you grow in experience and complete missions. In APEngine.ini (C: Users username Documents Alpha Protocol APGame Config), change the following settings: bSmoothFrameRate=FALSE UseVsync=False bUseBackgroundLevelStreaming=False (this can cause issues on systems with small amount of RAM ie 1-2 GB likevery long load times). One frame thread lag = false (all one word) open APInput.ini file and set the following two instances of smoothing to: bEnableMouseSmoothing=false By the way these settings don't fix it completely (atleast not for me) but the stuttering is much less noticeable. I also recommend modifying the APgame.ini and reducing MoveSpeedScoped to something more realistic.
